Dawn and veteran Amier prove their showjumping talent after eventing injury results in change of discipline

NEWBURGH-based rider Dawn Morley and her 20-year-old chestnut mare Amier won the first Nupafeed Discovery First Round at Bogenraith Equestrian's Granite City Festival 5-day affiliated showjumping event in July.

Amier (Ru) has been with Dawn for 12 years and she evented the 16hh mare until 2023 when she suffered a major tendon injury. The pair had already won the 2019 Novice class at Glamis Castle Horse Trials and competed in the 1* at Blair Horse Trials in 2022, finishing 10th out of 98 competitors, and then completing the 2* at Blair.

But the tendon inury led Dawn to re-think her ambitions and turn to pure showjumping. "Our dressage was always mediocre, but she was a machine across country and a fantastic showjumper," said Dawn, who keeps her mare at livery at Tahuna, Newburgh.

Once Ru had recovered from her injury, Dawn decided not to event again and chose to showjump the mare as she "loves and excels at it. We attempt dressage and have competed at Medium, but she definitely doesn't enjoy it!"

As a production chemist in the oil industry, Dawn is now mainly office based but still goes offshore occassionally, which means she can spend more time with her horse, although Ru does have the odd quirk which sometimes curtails her exercise.

"Despite being a chestnut mare she is very unmareish, has a very sweet nature and really easy with everything - except catching. She is a nightmare to catch so has to be put in a very small field on her own otherwise I can't get near her!"

Charley Hamilton, of Tillyoch Equestrian, Aberdeen, brought a string of horses and won eight classes over the course of the event.

Twenty-four year old Charley is on the horsescotland Athlete Development Pathway and competes regularly at 1.40/1.45m with MFS Stud horses Loretta Blue MFS, MFS Caydence, Rodetta MFS and speed horse Kung Fu Van't Heike. She now has a few younger MFS horses coming up through the ranks.

In 2024, Charley won the 4 year olds and overall Young Horse class at The Royal Highland Show and qualified for the U25's at London 2024.

In 2025 she also qualified for the Classic, the B and C and the Young Masters at The Royal Highland.

The leading rider award, for the rider with the most points over the five days at the festival, went to Kieran Thurkettle, who won five classes and the Marion Dreelan Grand Prix. He is a yard rider for Scottish horse dealer Ron Brady.

Featuring HOYS qualifiers, Disovery, Newcomers and Foxhunter classes, the event's biggest class is the Marion Dreelan Grand Prix/National 1.40m Open with a £1,000 prize.

It is run in memory of the late Marion, whose dream of establishing a premier Scottish venue in the North-east became Bogenraith Equestrian.
