Camp success and a well supported arena event gets the summer activities under way at NMW Riding Academy
RIDERS took part in a successful 'Traitors' themed summer camp over three days at NMW Riding Academy, Keithhall, Inverurie, in June.
Proprietor Rachael Doubleday, who also took part with her two horses KitKat and Albert alongside organising the theme of the camp, brought BHS Fellow Sam York, who is an international coach and lecturer, up from England; BE Lead coach for Scotland Richard Johnson-Smith and popular Aberdeenshire-based British Eventing Level 3 coach and BHSI Jen Morris, together to teach riders of all stages in flarwork, showjumping and cross-country.
There were also evening activites such as a round table to to try to banish the traitors and off-horse sessions on various topics.
Rachael said: "The Traitors camp was amazing, the riders loved it! The variation and the coaches were all fantastic.
"The coaches were all singing from the same hymn sheet but brought something different too. There was great banter and they got involved with everything.
"The off-horse sessions were the learning/theory part - how horses learn and practical communication with Jen; Richard did their understanding and communication with origami and how we read people's behaviour to try to understand. Richard's other session was balance and contact and making sure we don't use contact for balance.
"Sam did social licensing and how the publoic perceive our behaviour and how we can conduct ourselves in a way the public can understand.
"In the evenings we did the photo challenge, then they did a What 3 Words game collecting clues in the forest, then solved the anagram and communicated it to the other groups using semaphore flags.
"There was also team building on dry skis where they had to track their route with an app and draw a picture on the tracker by walking on the dry skis."
A group of voluteers provided meals for all the campers and extra coaching spaces in the evenings were opened up to outside riders.

Arena event proves popular with riders at NMW
THE first arena event - which had a mix of showjumping and cross-country style jumps - was held on grass at NMW.
Starting with cross-poles/30cm, the classes went up to 90cm in height and was well supported by clients and liveries.

Raffle of Le Mieux toy pony raises £100 for NMW
THE raffle of a roan-coloured Le Mieux toy pony by The Equine Times raised £200 in total, of which £100 was donated to NMW Riding Academy. The other £100 was donated to Hayfield Equestrian Centre (see their page in The Equine Times).
The competiton required those entering to guess the pony's name and the winner is revealed on the Le Mieux toy pony competition page and on our Facebook page.

More camps throughout summer
NMW will hold more camps throughout the summer - on 5th July an adult day camp for flatwork, jumping and working hunter will be held with BE coach Richard Johnston-Smith.
Pony day camps for beginners will take place on 9th July and 4th August. They are three hour sessions for beginners and novices who will learn how to groom and be around ponies, have a riding lesson and do some yard duties which will provide them with practical experience of how to look after a pony.
